Unlock HTC One (M8) & Install TWRP Recovery 3.2.3-1 - Easy Tutorial

If you are looking for a way to unlock HTC One (M8) and install latest TWRP recovery, then you are in right place. Unlocking your smartphone/tablet is the first step to extract the complete juice of your device hardware. WARNING: Unlocking the bootloader will erase all data on your device! Before proceeding, ensure the data you would like to retain is backed up to your PC and/or your Google account, or equivalent. Requirements:

  1. Make sure your computer has working adb and fastboot. Setup instructions can be found here.
  2. Enable USB Debugging on your device. [Tutorial]
  3. Proper USB driver is installed. [Download]

How To Unlock HTC One (M8)


  1. Enable OEM unlock in the Developer options under device Settings, if present.
  2. Once done, connect your device to your PC using a USB cable.
  3. Now on your computer open a command prompt (on Windows) or terminal (on Linux or macOS) window, and type: adb reboot bootloader . You can also boot your HTC One (M8) to fastboot mode by pressing Volume Down + Power when the device power is off, until the bootloader appears, then release the buttons. Use the volume buttons to scroll to “FASTBOOT” and press Power to select.
  4. To confirm the device is connected in fastboot mode or not, type: fastboot devices.
  5. Once confirmed, type the following command to unlock the bootloader: fastboot oem get_identifier_token.
  6. Visit the HTCDev Bootloader Unlock website and follow the instructions there to obtain your unlock key and unlock your bootloader. If your device does not appear in the drop-down list, select All Other Supported Models.
  7. The device should automatically reboot, if not then reboot it manually.
  8. Since the device resets completely, you will need to re-enable USB debugging for the next recovery installation process.

How To Install TWRP Recovery 3.2.3-1 on HTC One (M8)


  1. Download TWRP.
  2. Once done, connect your device to your PC using a USB cable.
  3. Now on your computer open a command prompt (on Windows) or terminal (on Linux or macOS) window, and type: adb reboot bootloader . You can also boot your HTC One (M8) to fastboot mode by pressing Volume Down + Power when the device power is off, until the bootloader appears, then release the buttons. Use the volume buttons to scroll to “FASTBOOT” and press Power to select.
  4. To confirm the device is connected in fastboot mode or not, type: fastboot devices.
  5. Once confirmed, type the following command to flash TWRP Recovery: fastboot flash recovery twrp-x.x.x-x-m8.img. [Note: Replace TWRP file name with your downloaded file name]
  6. The device should automatically reboot, if not then reboot it manually.

Tip: To boot into recovery first turn off your HTC One (M8) and then press and hold Volume Up and Power button together until the bootloader appears, then release the buttons. Use the volume buttons to scroll to “RECOVERY” and press Power to select.

That’s it! You now have an unlocked HTC One (M8) with latest supported TWRP Recovery installed.
